Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) is a somewhat controversial topic of discussion in the health and fitness industry. In an age where quick fixes and "life hacks" are all the rage, it's no wonder why a catchy headline can turn the next wave of fat burning, fitness fanatics into CLA sycophants. In light of the hundreds of articles you may find on the subject, I wanted to give insight of my first-hard experience with this supplement.
First, I'd like to give a little background into this topic. There are two types of essential fatty acids, omega-3's and omega-6's. What makes these two "essential," is that they cannot be produced on their own within the body. Meaning, they need to be consumed from an external source (diet or supplementation). Serious issues can arise due to under consumption of these fatty acids; skin dryness and irritation, dry eyes, joint stiffness and pain, physical hair properties, and even depression can be attributed to inadequate omega-3 consumption (1). Under absorption of omega-6 fatty acids in addition to other dietary insufficiencies can lead to heart problems, or blood sugar issues as they aid in lowering LDL cholesterol and improved insulin sensitivity (2).
What food sources do we commonly consume that provide us with these essential fatty acids? CLA is commonly found in meat and dairy products (grass fed animals have a higher content). CLA is also commonly found in vegetable oils that many of us use in everyday life.
Now, once we start focusing on our diet and make changes to the foods that we consume, some of these common foods are eaten less and less. I know that personally, it has been ages since I have used a vegetable oil in anything that I have made since changing my lifestyle. Many people also cut out dairy or meat for personal reasons or don't consume them as part of a religious belief. No matter the reason, avoiding these foods may in fact necessitate CLA supplementation. From personal experience, I have only used CLA regularly for about 2 months. I cannot completely attribute the physical changes that I've undergone, to CLA alone but I credit some of my successful (and ongoing) transformation to this supplement. Correct timing and dosage play a large part in the utilization of this supplement as you will probably be taking it as part of a nutrition and fitness regimen.
So, what's the verdict? Should conjugated linoleic acid be a part of your routine supplementation? Will it help your love handles melt away and give you the body of your dreams? In my personal opinion, the short answer to this question would be no. As with every nutritional supplement, their main value is seen when used in conjunction with a sound diet and fitness routine. As long as you have the proper diet planned for your goals, essential fatty acids will be consumed in sufficient volume.
